Building Support Networks in a Busy City

No matter what stage of life you are in, whether you are an international student, new to the workforce, a professional, having a support network would really help you along the way of life’s challenges.

Research shows that having a support network increases the general wellbeing and could even increase life expectancy of a person. However finding such people in your network in the busy urban life of Melbourne is no easy feat.  So here are some tips and resources for connecting to more people in a busy city like Melbourne.

  1. Take up a sport — do you enjoy playing a particular sport, or have been wanting to take up a new sport, this is your sign to find a local team, join a class.

  2. Reach out on social media — Sometimes our support network might be closer than we think it is. Do you have any friends or acquaintances that we haven’t reached out to for a while? Instagram/Facebook friends that never met up? Maybe it’s time to reach out to them.

  3. Join online communities, forums, or social media groups related to your interests or professional field — Engage with others in these online spaces, ask questions, and participate in discussions. This can lead to virtual connections that may translate into real-life friendships or networking opportunities.

  4. Explore events — Explore online platforms like Meetup or What’s on Melbourne to find social events, gatherings, and activities happening in your city. Whether it's a networking event, or a cultural meetup, attending these events can be a great way to meet new people and expand your social circle.

  5. Take up a class — along the lines of taking up sport, is there a skill you wanted to learn, or a chance to explore the creative side of yourself. Or to upskill yourself for you career. There are plenty of choices around Melbourne

  6. Host Gatherings or Potlucks: Take the initiative to host gatherings, potlucks, or dinner parties at your home. Invite friends, colleagues, neighbors, and acquaintances to come together and socialise in a relaxed setting. Hosting events can be a great way to strengthen existing connections and forge new friendships.

  7. Volunteering – Are you passionate about a cause, or perhaps just curious to learn more? Consider getting involved with local non-profits like ours or other organisations actively working towards making a difference. Volunteering not only allows you to give back to your community but also provides opportunities to meet people who share your passion for making a difference.

Building support networks in a busy city requires initiative, persistence, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. By being proactive and intentional in your efforts to meet new people and cultivate relationships, you can create a strong support network that enriches your life and helps you thrive in any environment.
