Empower Program: Music therapy session

Future Forte’s Empower Program recently held Session #5: Music Therapy with Shapes & Sounds, and it was an unforgettable experience. This virtual workshop, led by Asami Koike, a registered music therapist was attended by students eager to explore the therapeutic power of music. Designed to help students manage stress, especially around exam time and assignments, the session was a space for mental and emotional release.

Asami Koike’s expertise brought a fresh, creative approach to addressing mental health concerns. Over the course of 60 minutes, attendees were guided through the evidence-based benefits of music therapy, learning how to use music as a tool to manage mood, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. From calming rhythms to uplifting melodies, students were encouraged to explore music as a means of healing and grounding.

One of the most valuable aspects of the session was Asami’s focus on creating personalized playlists. She emphasized the importance of crafting a playlist that not only resonates with an individual’s mood but also uplifts and grounds them during difficult times. For many students dealing with the pressures of exams and life abroad, this was a welcome reminder of how music can provide comfort and support.

The session also provided a unique opportunity for participants to share their personal experiences and stories, creating a sense of community even in a virtual setting. Whether it was dealing with homesickness or the academic stress that comes with university life, the group found solace in the collective experience.

Leah Erika Pereira, a volunteer and attendee of the Empower Program, beautifully captured the essence of the session:

Our Music Therapy Session with Shapes & Sounds was a heartfelt experience, designed to give everyone a mental and emotional boost, no matter where they are on their journey. Led by the incredible Asami Koike, we took a deep dive into the soothing power of music, discovering how melodies and rhythms can become tools for healing. It was more than just a workshop – it felt like a warm embrace, a reminder that through the stress, homesickness, and challenges of life, music can be our constant companion.”

This testimonial truly reflects the impact the session had on attendees. It was more than just an hour spent learning about music; it was an emotional release, a space for self-reflection, and an opportunity for students to find a coping mechanism that resonates with them personally.

As part of the Empower Program, which focuses on student well-being, this music therapy session was a perfect addition. It catered not only to the mental health of students but also offered a creative outlet during a time when many feel bogged down by the demands of life. The program continues to offer these safe, supportive spaces where students can explore different ways to nurture their well-being.
